Hyundai Canada Apple CarPlay Updates Coming In January?

May 31, 2016  Updating for CarPlay was simple, and can be completed at home. From the time the initial download began until the time CarPlay was ready to be used was about 75 minutes. The process can vary in length depending on your internet speeds though, because the files you have to download from Hyundai are quite large.

I have received numerous e-mails and comments on the blog from owners of Hyundai Canada vehicles today tipping me off to the fact that Hyundai Canada will be rolling out updates to give 2017 vehicles Apple CarPlay in January. Several of them forwarded an e-mail response from Hyundai Canada which I have printed below:

Thank you for your email on Apple Car Play with Hyundai vehicles.

Hyundai Auto Canada does not have control over what programs are included in the Navigation updates on Canadian vehicles. At present we are aware that the 2016-2017 Elantra GT and Tucson which have onboard Navigation can obtain Apple Car Play and Google Android through the purchase of most current map/software update.

The only vehicle at this time that has factory installed Apple Car Play is the 2017 Tucson.
Please also note that Apple Car Play will be available for retrofit on 2017 vehicles which originally came with Google Android and have 7” or 8” screens in early 2017.

The download will be available on this website (http://www.hyundaicanada.com/pages/Apple-Car-Play/index.aspx) for free.

Now the comments that have been posted on the blog have started to generate some negative reactions from 2016 owners of Hyundai Canada vehicles. This despite the fact that Hyundai Canada has been clear about this upgrade program being for 2017 vehicles. At least at this point in time. It’s also generating negative reaction from Android Auto fans who have been looking for a upgrade to give them that piece of software, and this not doing anything to clear that up. So in the interest of trying to quiet this, I will reach out to Hyundai Canada to see if I can get any sort of clarification that will hopefully calm the waters.

UPDATE: Here’s a statement from Hyundai Canada. Please read it carefully as it is extremely detailed (and kudos to them for being that detailed):

Three 2017 Hyundai vehicles – Tucson, Sonata (non-hybrid), and Elantra GT – come from the factory with both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. We are working extremely hard and very quickly to deliver a free, online, self-serve update so 2017 model year Elantra Sedan, Santa Fe Sport, and Santa Fe XL customers can have Apple CarPlay on their vehicles. Those three, specific vehicles have been sold this year with only Android Auto. That disparity has to be addressed; it’s our top priority.

For clarity: An update with Apple CarPlay is forthcoming, but only for 2017 Elantra sedan, Santa Fe Sport, and Santa Fe XL vehicles. No other Hyundai vehicles – for any model year – will be receiving a software update with Apple CarPlay in January.

Any decisions about 2016 model year Hyundai vehicles or prior will be made at a later date and we currently do not have a timeline to make that decision. The plan for Hyundai Auto Canada has been to introduce both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay for the 2017 model year. The US, with different hardware and software, was able to introduce the applications in Hyundai vehicles earlier than we were. Hyundai in the US made numerous commitments to American customers about making the software available to them and these statements were erroneously picked-up by Canadian media. We have been working to educate Canadian media on the differences between countries and companies the best that we can.

All of our attempts to install Android Auto and Apple CarPlay on 2016 model year and prior Canadian vehicles has led to errors in the navigation/display software and broader incompatibility with display systems. Both the hardware and software on Canadian vehicles is structurally and operationally different than US vehicles. The earliest that Apple and Google could deliver CarPlay and Android Auto (respectively) for Canadian customers is the 2017 model year.

Recently, I began looking into how I could get Apple Carplay installed on my 2016 Hyundai i40. I could see Hyundai UK were tweeting that a free software update was available for any SE Nav model since Nov 2015. However, unlike our US counterparts, this was not a publically accessible upgrade. It must be done by a Hyundai dealer.

So I rang my local dealer here in Galway, and they gave me a quote for €100 to do the update. The €100 was apparently to cover the “labour” costs in doing the update. Hummm…

As a software engineer myself, I thought I’d search the web for a way to carry this out myself, since I was pretty sure that once I could get the firmware files, I would be able to figure out how to install the update.

I eventually came across a forum, where a link to download the dealer firmware was posted, along with some instructions. I thought it might be good for me to re-post those instructions in english here for anyone wanting to do it. Here goes…

WARNING: If you carry out this car firmware upgrade, you do so at your own risk. Update: according to the forum auther, @Sernaiko, this is the original Hyundai firmware, and has not been modified in any way, so, in theory, the risk should be minimal.

Hyundai Apple Carplay Update Download

What you will need

• A USB Stick (1GB or more will do). Formatted for FAT32.
• A ballpoint pen.
• A PC to download the firmware.
• The current version of software on your vehicle.
  • To find this out, on your car touchscreen, go to All Menus>System Info(scroll to the bottom to see that) and then take note of the “S/W ver.” field.
  • The version should begin with ST.XXXX.
  • Note the letters after ST.
  • That will determine which folder you want to use in step 4 below…

System Update Procedure

Note: I took a video of the in-car parts of the procedure and posted to youtube here, which may be of help.

1. Download and extract the firmware files from here. Also backed-up here.
2. You will see 4 folders: st_vf, st_vfia, st_vfsd and st_vfsdia
3. To know which one to open, take a look at the version on your vehicle at present.
   • Note the letters after ST.
   • That will determine which folder you want to use.
4. For me it was vfsdia. So, I looked inside the st_vfsdia folder and saw an update folder.
5. Insert your USB Stick into your PC, and ensure it is formatted as FAT32 (most memory sticks already are).
6. Copy the update folder directly over to the USB Stick. note that you should not use the car navigation SD card for this, as it will not work for a system update.
7. At this point, when you look at the USB drive on your PC, you should see the update folder at the root of the drive.
8. Eject the USB stick from your PC and go to the car.
9. Important: Start your engine and leave it running for all the rest of the procedure
10. Insert the USB stick into the usb slot in front of the gear stick.
11. On your car touchscreen, go to All Menus>System Info(scroll to the bottom to see that) and press the Update button.
12. Confirm the popup by pressing the OK button.
13. Sit back and relax. The update will take 30-40 minutes in total. Ensure you leave the engine running all the time during the update.
14. After about 10 minutes, you may see a system error (code 109), as I did.
    • You need to remove the USB stick at this point.
    • Now use your ballpoint pen to press the reset button for 5 seconds. The reset button is tiny and you can find it just to the right of the CD slot above the touchscreen.
15. The reset will reboot the system and continues the upgrade. The USB stick is no longer needed from now on, so you can put it away in your pocket.
16. The update will take another 20-30 minutes, so head away and grab a cup of tea.

In the end, you will have the latest firmware installed and you can plug in your smartphone to enjoy Android Auto or Apple Carplay.
