Jul 19, 2016 Kia is offering free CarPlay or Android Auto upgrades for some of its latest vehicles, allowing drivers to get their hands on the smartest in-car platforms. Cars equipped with the AVN 4.0.

Kia announced that free Apple CarPlayand Android Auto software updates will be available for eligible vehicles when equipped with a compatible navigation system (AVN 4.0) or UVO3 by the end of July.

The following vehicles are eligible for the software update:

• Kia Forte 2017 Model Year.
• Kia Optima 2015-16 Model Years.
• Kia Optima Hybrid 2015-16 Model Years.
• Kia Sedona 2015-16 Model Years.
• Kia Soul 2014-16 Model Years.
• Kia Soul EV 2015-16 Model Years.
• Kia Sorento 2016 Model Year.
• Kia Sportage 2017.

With these types of updates the car owner needs a USB drive and computer to download the software. Then the software is update uploaded into the vehicle. It can take hours to accomplish therefore it is a good idea to not need the car for while when you decide to install the update.

Customers will be notified by the end of July via email to go to myuvo.com for vehicle eligibility and step-by-step instructions on updating their vehicle with the latest downloadable software. All owners of new and pre-owned vehicles must register at myuvo.com to receive email notifications that the software is available for download.

UVO support is available by calling 1-800-333-4KIA (4542). There may be charge to the dealer to install the update.

CarPlay gives drivers the ability to access the device’s seamless user interface through Kia’s UVO infotainment system. By connecting the iPhone into the USB port, users are able to make phone calls, access music, send and receive messages, get directions optimized for traffic conditions and more while staying focused on the road. CarPlay also features hands-free support via Siri voice control or the vehicle’s controls and touchscreen.

Current CarPlay apps listed include Podcasts, Beats Music, iHeart Radio, At Bat, Spotify, Stitcher, CBS Radio, Rdio and Audiobooks.com. Apple Maps gives turn-by-turn directions, traffic conditions and estimated travel times. It suggests address from your contacts and calendars.

Android Auto brings Android into the car for music, messaging Google Maps, calendar integration and phone functions using the touchscreen or the Ok Google through the voice button.

According to an Autotrader study, Android and Auto and CarPlay are recognized as being worthwhile.

Meanwhile some Hyundai model owners are still waiting for Android Auto and CarPlay updates while others received their updates already.

Kia Motors announced that the 2017 Sportage and 2016 Optima, when equipped with a compatible navigation system or UVO 3 (found currently on the Sportage) will be offered with Apple CarPlay when the Kia retailers receive delivery during the second quarter.

The 2017 Sorento was the first Kia vehicle to be offered with CarPlay support.

• Use only a USB device formatted to FAT 12/16/32.
• USB devices without USB I/F authentication may not be recognizable.
• Make sure the USB connection terminal does not come in contact with the human body or other objects.
• If you repeatedly connect or disconnect the USB device in a short period of time, it may break the device.
• You may hear a strange noise when connecting or disconnecting a USB device.
• If you disconnect the external USB device during playback in USB mode, the external USB device can be damaged or may malfunction. Therefore, disconnect the external USB device when the audio is turned off or in another mode. (e.g, Radio)
• Depending on the type and capacity of the external USB device or the type of the files stored in the device, there is a difference in the time for recognition the device.
• Do not use the USB device for purposes other than playing music files.
• Playing videos through the USB is not supported.
• Use of USB accessories such as rechargers or heaters using USB I/F may lower performance or cause trouble.
• If you use devices such as a USB hub purchased separately, the vehicle’s audio system may not recognize the USB device. In that case, connect the USB device directly to the multimedia terminal of the vehicle.
• If the USB device is divided by logical drives, only the music files on the highest-priority drive are recognized by car audio.
• Devices such as MP3 Player/ Cellular phone/Digital camera can be unrecognizable by standard USB I/F can be unrecognizable.
• Charging through the USB may not be supported in some mobile devices.
• USB HDD or USB types liable to connection failures due to vehicle vibrations are not supported.
• Some non-standard USB devices (METAL COVER TYPE USB) can be unrecognizable.
• Some USB flash memory readers (such as CF, SD, micro SD, etc.) or external-HDD type devices can be unrecognizable.
• Music files protected by DRM (DIGITAL RIGHTS MANAGEMENT) are not recognizable.
• The data in the USB memory may be lost while using this audio. Always back up important data on a personal storage device.

• Please avoid using USB memory products which can be used as key chains or cellular phone accessories as they could cause damage to the USB jack. Please make certain only to use plug type connector products.
